The main goal of the Fulbright scholarships program is to offer a chance for a wide range of individuals to study at educational institutions in the United States. These scholarships are specifically awarded to individuals from underprivileged communities, minority groups, and those who come from traditionally marginalized backgrounds.

Since 1946, the United States of America has been offering Fulbright scholarships to numerous foreign students from 155 countries who wish to pursue their education at American universities and academic institutions. This scholarship was created with the intention of supporting talented and creative international students in pursuing graduate studies and carrying out exceptional research in the United States.

The merit-based scholarship offers funding for graduate and PhD level studies or research at a U.S. university for a duration of two to five years. AMIDEAST has been a strong supporter of Fulbright students, enabling them to partake in exchange programs and successfully complete their grants in the United States. Steps to Apply for Fulbright Scholarship 2024

To apply for the Fulbright scholarship, please follow the step-by-step application procedure outlined below:

(1) Submit an Online Application

In order to be eligible for the Fulbright program, one must gather a range of materials that will aid the USEFP in evaluating their qualifications. All required materials must be included with the application submission.

(2) Organize Official Records of Academic Performance and Certifications

Students must provide transcripts and degrees from a 4-year undergraduate program or its equivalent. Equivalent programs may include 3-year bachelor programs from international universities or ACCA. In addition, applicants for PhD programs must also submit their MPhil or MS degrees and transcripts. It is also possible to apply during the final year of undergraduate studies, as long as the degree is obtained by December of the current year.

The USEFP considers a comprehensive view of your academic records, not solely relying on your GPA. They consider factors such as the institution you attended, the courses you completed, and your grades in individual courses. They also take into consideration the variations in grading systems among different universities. While there is no specific minimum GPA requirement for the application, it is noted that successful Fulbright candidates typically have impressive undergraduate academic backgrounds. However, undergraduate academics are just one aspect taken into account by the Fulbright panel when assessing a candidate.

(3) Complete the GRE General Test and the TOEFL exam.

When sending in your application, you have the option to report the unofficial GRE score from the day of the test or your official score if you have already received it. It is mandatory for all applicants to request ETS to send an official score report directly to USEFP using the code 9388. GRE general (international) test scores are necessary when applying. A score of 315+ is considered good for Engineering and Sciences on the GRE, while a score of 310+ is acceptable for other fields. Taking the GRE subject test is not mandatory.

The minimum GRE score needed to be eligible for the Fulbright program is 138 for verbal and 136 for quantitative sections. However, successful candidates typically have a GRE score in the higher percentiles. In case you take the GRE multiple times, you can only report your top score, which will be considered by Fulbright. While the TOEFL is not mandatory during the application process, it will be required if you are selected for an interview. The use of IELTS is not permitted.

(4) Essay Preparation

The Fulbright application requires two essays to be written within the allotted space of 800 words provided in the application form. It is important to avoid over-crafting the essays and instead focus on clear language to effectively communicate with the Fulbright panel, who may not be familiar with your background. Prior to beginning the essays, it is recommended to develop a marketing strategy for oneself. Typically, successful applicants spend 4-6 weeks on writing and refining their essays.

(5) A total of three letters of recommendation are necessary.

By the application deadline, it is required that you obtain three recommendations to accompany your application. You may choose to have three academic reference letters, or a combination of two academic and one professional, or two professional and one academic. It is mandatory to have at least one academic reference letter. After submitting your online application, your referees will receive an online form via email.

Finding someone to write your references is not a standardized process. It may not always be feasible to request a recommendation from your current employer, as USEFP does not want to put your current job at risk during the application process. Look for individuals who are familiar enough with you to provide a thorough response, such as a previous employer, teacher, or researcher.

(6) Create a Professional Curriculum Vitae for Academic Purposes

It is important to include an updated and recent resume in the designated section of the application form. The resume does not have to be in a specific format.

(7) Apply Online

All applications must be completed through the online platform.

(8) Discussion

Once your application has been submitted and evaluated, you may receive an invitation for a panel interview. The decisions for the interviews are typically made by mid-September and the actual interviews are scheduled for October. If you do not hear back from USEFP by October, it means that you have not been selected. The interview is considered a positive sign of potential selection, but it does not guarantee admission. The interviews usually last 15 to 30 minutes and are conducted by a panel of four individuals. It is required that you bring your TOEFL registration slip with you on the day of the interview, but it is not necessary to have taken the TOEFL exam by that date.
