The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is one of the most recognized international standardized tests of English language proficiency for non-native English speakers. English language proficiency in non-native English speakers is tested by assessing performance potential in four sections: writing, reading, speaking and listening. IELTS is assessed on a scale of 0 to 9. Students are individually scored for the four sections and then these scores are averaged for a total IELTS score.

How is IELTS scored?

How to score 8 bands+ in IELTS exam?
All four sections (Listening | Reading | Writing | Speaking) are equally important and play a vital role in calculating the overall IELTS score. All four sections must be passed to secure IELTS band 8 or above.
1. Access the listening section:
i) Vocabulary is the key to excel in the listening section. Read as many references as possible. Inculcate the habit of writing down odd terms you encounter, to help you remember them throughout the test.
ii) Pay attention to the flow of the content of the spoken material when trying to summarize the material provided. Write down the main ideas and write the main synopsis with this outline. Repeat regularly to get a feel for how to better understand each spoken word.
iii) Pay attention to the words throughout the passage stipulating an accurate representation. The most important parts to identify are the introductions, main steps, ideas and conclusions. Develop an understanding to decipher the flow of spoken content.
iv) As a tester, it is essential to be well-versed in assessing the purpose of the speech or conversation.
2. Nail the Reading section:
i) Time management is one of the most important parts of this test. A strict time limit tests your ability to complete each task in a timely manner. The speed reading ability will help you find the answers allowing you to scan the passage quickly.
ii) Skimming is the basic strategy of reading a paragraph in order to answer questions. Scanning is the basic ability to quickly locate all information. Always read the passage in 3-4 minutes and mark the relevant parts and key words when reading the passage.
iii) There are approximately 16 questions grouped into three categories: local, global and cluster. This knowledge will not only save time, but will also help provide accurate answers.
iv) A solid grammar can help identify the correct solution in a short time.
v) Each request contains a set of keywords which must be fully utilized in order to obtain a response.
3. Access the writing section:
i) Provide the perfect answer to the question that is easy to read. The distinctiveness of your answers and a bulletproof approach will become one of the most important factors in improving your overall test score.
ii) Write a descriptive article while keeping the word count and fulfilling the goal of writing fewer words.
iii) Expand your lexicon. Teach new vocabulary as the test assesses your overall ability to capture English
4. Nail the floor section:
i) Emphasize perfect pronunciation, not accent, as the examiner understands that you are not a native English speaker.
ii) Speak with confidence, without hesitation and avoid using fillers to make a significant difference in your total score. To reinforce your answer, try to avoid fillers and jargon, instead use idioms and phrases.
iii) Saying a word flatly or monotonously misses important information. Proper speaking techniques, emphasis on key words, and voice modulation help create a lasting impact on the mind of the reviewer.
